Solar Drinking Water
Breaking the Queue: How Clean Water Empowered Sevada
A solar-powered drinking water system with a 5,000-litre tank and seven taps replaced Sevada’s long handpump queues, freeing time for livelihoods and women’s self-help groups.
Change in action
The story
In Sevada, a quiet village in Narmada district, life once flowed around a single fragile lifeline—a lone handpump.
Until December 2025, nearly 900 villagers depended on it, as six other handpumps produced saline, unusable water. Each morning began in darkness and determination. By 4:30 a.m., women stood in long, snaking queues, spending up to three exhausting hours just to collect water. It wasn’t just a chore—it was a daily struggle etched in patience, effort, and sacrifice.
Time slipped through their fingers. Health suffered. Opportunities faded.
Then came a ray of change.
In January 2026, with support from LIC Housing Finance Limited, the Deepak Foundation, and the Nessa Group, a solar-powered drinking water system transformed the village. A 2 HP pump, a 5,000-litre tank, and seven taps replaced the old hardship. The handpump that once symbolized struggle quietly disappeared.
And just like that, life began to flow differently.
Now, water is just a turn away—no queues, no chaos. What once took hours now takes minutes. Mornings are calmer, lighter, filled with possibility. Even children lend a hand, turning a burden into a shared task.
With time finally in their grasp, women are rewriting their stories. They work longer in their fields, boost their incomes, and step into spaces once out of reach. Weekly Self-Help Group meetings buzz with energy, where skills like sewing, mehendi, embroidery, and pickle-making are shaping new futures.
The ripple effect is undeniable—SHG participation has surged from 20 women to 200.
Sevada’s journey is more than a story of water. It is a story of time reclaimed, strength rediscovered, and dignity restored.
Because sometimes, the smallest flow of change can create the strongest current of transformation.
