Solar Irrigation
Harvesting the Sun: Devabhai’s Journey from Diesel Dependence to Prosperity
Devabhai Sisodiya replaced diesel irrigation with a 10 HP solar pump. Over two and a half years, his farm became more productive and the system became a shared resource for nearby farmers.
Change in action
The story
In Bamnoj village of Danta block, Banaskantha, 47-year-old farmer Devabhai Sisodiya, an owner of 20 acre land, once struggled with high costs and low returns. His 5 HP diesel pump meant sleepless nights, frequent breakdowns, and monthly expenses of ₹41,000. Despite the effort, yields were low and income barely sustained his family and 30 cattle.
Then came a turning point in June 2023.
With support from HDFC Parivartan, TATA CINI, and Nessa Group, he installed a 10 HP solar pump—bringing reliable irrigation, zero diesel cost, and peace of mind. Farming became efficient, predictable, and manageable even by his family.
Within the period of 2 and ½ years, the results were dramatic. Crop yield increased up to six times, and income rose sharply to ₹5–6 lakhs per season. More fodder led to healthier cattle, expanding his herd to 200 and boosting milk income to ₹40,000 per month.
His success became a shared opportunity. Nearby farmers began using his solar system, turning it into a community resource.
Beyond farming, Devabhai adopted drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and biogas—creating a sustainable model farm. Women in the village gained time and new skills, joining self-help groups and artisan work.
From diesel struggles to solar success, Devabhai’s journey shows how the right support can transform livelihoods—and uplift an entire community.
