Solar Street Lighting
From Darkness to Dignity: The Transformation of Navi Jambuvai
Solar street lights brought safer, more active evenings to Navi Jambuvai. Women can travel after dusk, children have more time outdoors, and village life continues during power cuts.
Change in action
The story
As the sun set over Navi Jambuvai, a small village near Vadodara, life used to come to a standstill. By 6:30 p.m., darkness took over—roads vanished, people stayed indoors, and fear of snake bites and theft kept families confined. Even simple routines had to be completed before sunset, making evenings quiet and restrictive.
Then everything changed.
With support from Larsen & Toubro and the Nessa Group, 52 solar street lights were installed across the village. Within just two months, Navi Jambuvai was transformed.
Today, the village comes alive after dusk. Women walk freely, attend late evening Self-Help Group meetings, and even deliver milk after dark with confidence. Children play longer and study under the lights during power cuts. Streets once silent are now filled with activity and connection.
Safety has improved dramatically—incidents of theft, snake bites, and animal attacks have dropped. The lights have also opened new economic opportunities, allowing families to work in the evenings without extra costs.
Even during storms, when electricity failed, the solar lights kept shining—reliable and resilient. At the same time, they have reduced pollution and cut over 3,000 kg of CO₂ emissions.
Navi Jambuvai is no longer a village that disappears after sunset—it’s a place that glows with safety, opportunity, and renewed life.
